
Ocean Plastic Recycling
Ocean Waste Plastics (OWP) [website] headquartered in Denmark with factories in the country, China and India and offices also in Sweden, Germany, Spain, Italy, England, the USA and Australia has since 2013 been working with the concept of recycling plastic from the oceans. The process of converting this category of waste into new packaging has been long and difficult. In 2018 the company finally had a break through - and now it proudly cleans the oceans by supplying customers with packaging made of what was polluting the largest bodies of water on the planet.
Ninety percent of the plastic that is polluting our oceans derive from only 10 river systems. OWP's objective is in part to prevent the plastic from being carried out into the oceans, which is why it also collects plastic from rivers.
The first Ocean Waste Plastic was collected, processed and finally turned into new packaging in May 2015. It was very challenging. Not only to have the plastic collected (back then around Bali only), but also to find processors who could handle it and turn it into new raw material that was possible to inject - not to talk about the injection itself.
In early 2017 the private equity firm Blue Equity approached management wanting to be part of its adventure to save the planet. The firm enabled OWP to upscale our processes and be the front leader when it comes to using plastic collected from the oceans.
In the spring of 2018 the first packaging was introduced to the market. Ever since, the number of brands implementing OWP into their packaging is increasing on a weekly basis.
The team constantly tries to find new ways to achieve a more sustainable future for the environment and the packaging industry.
The United Nations has over a long period of time thoroughly analyzed and evaluated how OWP works with ocean waste plastic, and have come to the conclusion how a huge positive difference the company has on the environment. Based on validated documentation they have asked us to participate in their realization of Sustainable Development Goal number 12, one of the 17 goals that need to be achieved before 2030 to save our planet.
The United Nations officially chose to invests in OWP through their SDG program to develop our corporate practices further for the benefit of the global environment
An indirect benefit of OWP is major reduction in CO2 emission. Production of recycled resin uses 85% less energy and emits 75% fewer greenhouse gases than producing virgin resin.
The independent organizations OceanWatch and Ocean Works verifies the ocean pick-ups and cleaning process of the collected plastic - and ensure traceability.
